Testimony about the experience of an immigrant woman crossing the Atlantic [most probably on board the SS Thessaloniki which “nearly sank in a hurricane in December, 1915”: “I remember her [Karanikas’s mother] describing the waves ‘higher than the smokestacks’ of the ship, how they feared drowning in the ocean, and how they prayed to the Panaghia to save them” (14).
